NSW Road Trip

With a four-day weekend to play with thanks to the Melbourne horse racing cup, Meg and I decided to put the car through its paces with a road trip. I was keen to see how far we could get in two days before having to turn around. So we headed off eastwards towards the southeastern corner of Australia reaching Eden on the first evening having come through some heavy weather. As the name suggests, Eden was a nice spot to spend a few hours and as it is the whale migration season, we even got to see a whale or two. Mid-morning we headed off up the coast of NSW taking in Merimbula, Bermagui and Tathra through sleepy green-hilled cheese making country and past deserted beaches before stopping over in Batemans Bay for the night and finding fish and chips.

The return leg of our journey took us through the Great Dividing Range of NSW and into a national park where we stopped for the night in Thredbo, a ski resort on the highest mountain in OZ. As it was out of season, the place was deserted, but we managed to find the one bar that was open and had a beer whilst taking it all in. It was cold up there and there was still snow on the peaks – not something I’d ever associated with Australia. The last day was a long, hot drive through the winding mountain roads and down into alpine farming country before hitting the highway for a straight shot home. We got some funny looks from the 4×4 drivers as we traversed the mountains in our little city car!!
